By 1932 the housing market was collapsing; farm bankruptcies had been particularly high in the South. In many areas, the traditional rural way of life was being eroded, and the farms were increasingly the only source of livelihood. Partly as a result, numerous people were moving into cities. The average number of weekly families in rural areas in the late 1920s was between 15 and 16 percent lower than a decade earlier, and there was an increase in the number of people in cities and towns. Most of those moving to cities were from the farming, or farm-working, population.
The Midwest and Great Plains were traditionally the main regions of migration. By 1931, the Midwest had less than half the number of farms as compared to a decade earlier. In the South, there was less than a quarter of the number of farms.
Between 1929 and 1931, the number of families who moved to cities from the Midwest and Great Plains was between 2.5 and 3 million. The Northeast was the least affected by the economic crisis, with a net migration of about 500,000 families. There was a shift of migrants from the rural population of the South and West be359ba680
